The "self built" circa 1934 Fenwick Williams designed catboat is scheduled to go for a splash July 15,2006. This christening will mark the end of a ten year building process by violin maker, Scott W. Hershey. "I've experienced a few setbacks along the building process, I thought I could get her done in five years but, that was way too aggressive thinking at that time", Hershey said. "I am glad it took a few years longer to build because I made quite a few modifications, that might have been over looked if I was building at a faster pace".
This is a big cat, measuring in at 24' with a beam of 10". The "Lazy Lucy" was built entirely from scratch. "I used a "sawyer" in Gettysburg, PA for the white oak and imported all of the Spanish cedar, teak and mahogany from other regional suppliers". Hershey said, adding. "Most of the building was done alone, with occasional help from family and friends. I couldn't begin to know the total hours spent building her but, it did cut into my instrument making over the years and now, I am beginning to resume my normal instrument making production. I plan to sail her for the first season or two on the Chesapeake Bay and then sail her down to a place we love, on Roanoke Island, North Carolina. We'll see how the trade winds blow".
